What causes acne

Acne is the result of hair follicles becoming blocked. These tiny holes, which are present in the skin, can become blocked when too much sebum is produced and combines with dead skin cells. If this ‘plug’ happens to follicles close to the skin’s surface, it can lead to whiteheads or blackheads being created. Bacteria can then also contaminate these plugged follicles, leading to cysts, nodules, pustules, or papules.

While this can happen to anyone – particularly teenagers – if proper acne skin care isn’t conducted, it can lead to further acne-related issues. 

Fortunately, there are various routes you can take when it comes to skincare for acne-prone skin. With the right tips, treatments, and routines in place, it’s possible to eliminate blemishes and not let acne negatively impact your appearance and self-esteem. Below we’ve listed both tips to keep in mind and an effective skincare routine. 

Skincare for acne is not something that you can take lightly. Breakouts are likely to strike when you let your guard down, so it’s imperative you stay on top of it at all times. This can be done by following the tips below.

Keep your hands away from your face

Even if your face is itchy, always try and avoid touching or scratching the affected area. This can lead to further irritation to the inflamed skin. Plus, if any pimples are picked or popped, this might lead to further issues such as infection and scarring. Moreover, simply touching your face can spread bacteria.

Avoid the sun

Easier said than done, admittedly, but the ultraviolet rays from the sun can lead to redness and increased inflammation. As a result, you should limit your time in the sun when possible. Plus, when you do venture outside, ensure you apply sunscreen frequently and wear protective clothing such as a broad-brimmed hat.

Use makeup sparingly

If you’re having a breakout, stay away from using foundation and powders like blush and bronzer. If you do decide to use makeup, try to select mineral makeup or oil-free cosmetics that are labeled “non comedogenic,” which means it shouldn’t lead to pore blockages or acne. Also, if you opt to wear makeup, never forget to wash it off completely at the end of the day.

Watch what you eat

Your diet is a vital part of looking after your body – and that includes your skin. It makes sense to dodge the likes of junk food and greasy food, but you also have to watch out for dairy products and items featuring high levels of processed sugar. These can trigger acne. Ensure you add more whole grains, vegetables, and fresh fruits to your diet. 

If you’re prone to acne breakouts, it is essential you have an effective skincare routine in place. A daily process helps to keep pores clear, speed up the healing of blemishes, and remove excess oil. An effective routine doesn’t have to be complex, and you only have to dedicate a few minutes each morning and nighttime to the cause.

Gently cleanse the face

The first step of your skincare routine should be to gently cleanse your face. With either a soft washcloth or your fingertips, wash your face with warm water thoroughly. Make sure not to miss your neck and jawline. Even though you should clean thoroughly, this doesn’t mean being aggressive. It won’t get your skin any cleaner – and it could even accentuate breakouts.

Moisturise
